Building Stronger Communities:
A Community Conversation About Housing in Northumberland

Housing is changing, and so are the ways Habitat is helping.

 

Hear national and local perspectives from Habitat for Humanity Canada Senior Director of Programs Stacey Sawchuk and Habitat Northumberland CEO Cathy Borowec as they explore today's housing challenges and the innovative programs helping people stay safely and independently in their homes. The evening concludes with a guided community conversation about practical local solutions.

 

You'll learn about:

  • Housing challenges facing Northumberland and communities across Canada.

  • How seniors, women, Indigenous communities, and other vulnerable groups are being affected.

  • Habitat's Critical Home Repairs and Market Repairs programs.

  • Local success stories, including Habitat's work in Alderville and women-led initiatives.

  • How to recognize when someone you know may qualify for Habitat's Home Repair programs.

Free to attend. Registration is required.

Building Homes, Big & Small: Kids' Birdhouse Workshop

Thursday, July 16th | 10–11 a.m. & Saturday, July 18th | 11a.m.-12 p.m.

Build a birdhouse, spark a builder. In this hands-on workshop, kids will design and assemble their own birdhouse 🐦 while learning how safe shelter helps both birds and families.

 

Ideal for children 6-12 years old.

 

We'll provide:

  • All building materials

  • Child-friendly tools and safety equipment

  • Step-by-step instruction

  • A completed birdhouse to take home

It's a great way to spark creativity, build confidence, and introduce children to the joy of making something with their own hands—all while supporting Habitat for Humanity Northumberland's mission to build stronger communities.

 

This event will be held outside if the weather is nice and inside if the weather is rainy or stormy. Please dress accordingly.

Pallets, Planters & Possibilities: A Girls' Afternoon Out

Saturday, July 18th | 1–4 p.m.

Grab a friend and join us for a unique girls' afternoon out where creativity, confidence, and sustainability come together.

 

As part of Habitat in Action Week, you'll learn how reclaimed pallet wood can be given a beautiful second life by creating your own rustic side table or plant stand to take home. It's a fun, hands-on introduction to woodworking while celebrating the power of the circular economy—keeping quality materials in use, reducing waste, and creating something meaningful from what others might overlook.

 

During this intimate, women-only workshop, you'll learn how to:

  • Safely disassemble a wooden pallet

  • Prepare reclaimed wood using a planerUse a variety of power tools with confidence

  • Measure, assemble, and finish your own handcrafted project

 

Whether you're completely new to DIY or ready to tackle your next project, our team will guide you every step of the way in a relaxed, supportive environment.All tools, materials, and safety equipment are provided—just bring your curiosity and a willingness to try something new.

 

Space is limited to keep the workshop small and personalized, so register early to reserve your spot.

 

This event is hosted both outside and inside, please dress for the weather.

Cost is $75 for the 3 hour workshop - 5 spaces only
