Celebrating 2024: Habitat for Humanity Northumberland's Impact and Successes

As we look back on an incredible year at Habitat for Humanity Northumberland, we are filled with gratitude and pride for the achievements that have been made possible through the support of our community, volunteers, donors, and partners. The year 2024 was a testament to the power of collaboration and commitment as we continued our mission to build homes, hope, and a brighter future for those in need.

Volunteers: The Heart of Our Success

One of the most inspiring highlights of 2024 was the tremendous contribution made by participants through the Province of Ontario’s Skills Development Fund Program. Over 1,700 hours were logged by individuals looking to diversify their skills by learning about residential construction alongside our staff and by doing so, helped improve the lives of others.

In addition to this, we are thrilled to share that our build volunteers, including those who participated in team builds, as well as ReStore volunteers, office staff, and event volunteers, together logged an astounding 15,000 volunteer hours in 2024. Whether building homes on-site, assisting in our ReStore, helping with administrative tasks, or contributing to events, these volunteers were integral in helping us achieve our mission. Their hard work, enthusiasm, and commitment to our cause are the driving forces behind every success.

Building Homes, Building a Sustainable Future

In 2024, Habitat for Humanity Northumberland achieved significant milestones in both our mission to provide affordable housing and our commitment to sustainability. We are proud to have underway a 7-unit net-zero townhome project in Baltimore, Ontario, and a single detached home in Cobourg. These projects represent not just the homes of the future but the future of homebuilding itself.

The net-zero townhomes in Baltimore are a groundbreaking step toward creating energy-efficient, environmentally friendly housing solutions. These homes generate as much energy as they consume, offering long-term benefits for both the families who will live there and the environment.

Our single detached home in Cobourg also stands as a symbol of our dedication to building affordable, high-quality homes for families in need. The construction of these two projects demonstrates our ability to innovate while staying true to our mission of providing families with the opportunity to build a better future through homeownership.

Making a Difference for Families

While no housing projects were completed in 2024, Habitat for Humanity Northumberland still served 148 households through various programs designed to help families maintain stability, safety, and independence.

These programs include:

  • Home Repairs Program: Offering critical repairs and renovations, ensuring that families can continue to live in homes that are safe and healthy.

  • Indigenous Housing Program: Partnering with Indigenous communities to repair homes and provide sustainable housing solutions, contributing to reconciliation and equity.

  • Second Stage Housing: Providing transitional housing for women and children fleeing violence, offering a supportive environment as they rebuild their lives.

  • Furniture Program: Supplying gently used furniture to families in need, helping create a sense of home and comfort.

  • Global Initiatives: Extending our reach beyond local borders, Habitat for Humanity Northumberland also supported global initiatives that aim to provide safe and affordable housing to families around the world.

Each of these programs plays a vital role in supporting families at different stages of their journey, whether they’re in need of a safe place to call home or working to make their current living conditions more secure. The success of these programs is a reflection of the kindness, generosity, and commitment of the Northumberland community.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Affordable Housing

As we step into 2025, we remain focused on expanding our reach and increasing our impact. The need for affordable housing continues to grow, and our work is more important than ever. In the coming year, we are committed to completing these 8 homes, providing more support to families, and engaging even more volunteers in our mission.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the success of 2024. Together, we are making a difference, one home at a time.
