Baltimore, ON – On Wednesday May 21st, 2025, Habitat for Humanity Northumberland (Habitat) board members, volunteers and staff joined community members, businesses and organizations, and local politicians to celebrate the completion of the seven-unit Net-Zero townhomes in the Village of Baltimore. Seven families were able to get keys to their new homes, ready to take advantage of this new opportunity.
In 2021, Habitat acquired a vacant building lot at the site and announced the plans for the project on the site in November of 2022. May 2023, Habitat officially broke ground to begin construction of the 7-unit complex in Baltimore, not only the largest single development Habitat has ever undertaken, but also the very first net zero project for HFHN and the largest net zero project for Habitat Canada.
“At Habitat, every build is unique, but this has been a dream project. This is the first time we have been able to house seven families all at once. In total – 24 lives are being positively impacted through this build,” CEO Cathy Borowec explains. “Since this has been such a significant project for Habitat, we also embarked on our first capital campaign. Funds raised by the Cabinet, which was chaired by the Pennington-Campbell family, helped us cover the cost of some of the building materials and equipment needed for the energy efficiencies of these homes. All the contributions from our community have been vital to this success, especially as we faced alarming increases in costs of these materials as the project progressed.”
The Government of Canada has committed $350,000 through the Affordable Housing Fund under the National Housing Strategy towards this Habitat Northumberland build.
In total, since 2019, the Government of Canada has supported Habitat for Humanity Canada in reaching a goal of building 804 homes across Canada through a $65.1 million investment from the Government of Canada’s Affordable Housing Fund.
As new Habitat homeowners, Amber and Jordan, Cassie and Nathan, Corrine and Brandon, Hailey, Jenna, Melissa and Matt, Nic and Kristin and their children have given and will continue to give back to the local community through their partnership with Habitat. Along with family and friends, they have contributed over 3500 hours in the Habitat ReStore and on the Habitat construction site. This has made a significant impact on Habitat’s operations and especially benefitting the ReStore Habitat ReStore which, in turn, helps to fund the home construction program.
